Ordinal numbers represent a poisiton or ranking. They are also used for dates.

  • Jeremy was the fourth person to arrive.

  • Paul's birthday is on the fifth of December.

  • It's my cousins sixth birthday today.

  • This is the seventh season of the television show, Friends.

The ordinal numbers first, second and third are the only numbers we cannot simply add th to.

You will also notice that with two digit numbers, it is only the last number which has been changed.

21 becomes twenty-first (21st).

22 becomes twenty-second (22nd).

23 becomes twenty-third (23rd).

151 becomes one hundred and fifty-first (151st).

52 becomes fifty-second (52nd).

1023 becomes one thousand and twenty-third (1023rd).

We hyphenate numbers when we write them as words whether they are ordinal or cardinal numbers. This only applies to the numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine and all numbers which include the numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
